Puerto Rico Trip
**Thanks to the help of friends and family who watched Nelson and Alli, Shawna was a
ble to accompany Greg on his business trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in May. ** We flew into San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. Greg arrived on Sunday and Shawna on Monday. The hotel where we stayed, Embassy Suites Dorado del Mar, was about 30 minutes west of the airport. After a couple of days we got used to the road rules which are 'there are no rules' and most likely the street you want isn't on the map. After dropping Greg off at work each morning, Shawna would take the car and go shopping or site seeing or head back to the hotel to lay on the beach. The people were so kind to us. Everyone would start talking to us in Spanish and then when they found out we only spoke English they would switch to English, in most cases with no accent. The weather was BEAUTIFUL the whole week even though it was forecast to rain the entire time (it i
s their rainy season.) It is very tropical, warm and sunny. The ocean is teal and the wildlife was exotic. There were iguanas everywhere and at night we could hear the song of the Coqui frog. (Yes, you Dora the Explorer fans out there know what I'm talking about.) Tuesday night we headed up to Arecibo where the big in ground radio telescope in the movie Contact is. Unfortunately, the research facility was already closed when we got there. We could only see the enormous support poles for the telescope. Oh, well, the drive there was very exciting, as is most driving that goes on there. Thursday Shawna took off for Old San Juan. She spent the morning shopping 0n the blue cobble stone streets. She ate at the Hard Rock Cafe near the port for lunch and then spent the afternoon touring the Spanish forts built in the 1500 and 1600's. That evening we went to the 
beach at Carolina. It was beautiful. The waves were around four or five feet. We love the ocean, but were only able to stay for a few minutes because the sand fleas ate us alive (which we found out later only come out at dusk.) We left on Friday on different planes, but flying over the same bright blue green ocean. Puerto Rico is a short three and a half hour flight from Houston and inexpensive compared to other tropical destinations. We hope to go back again and spend more time looking around. There are other beaches to play on, rain forests to see and mountains to climb. Who knows, maybe by the time we go back they will be the 51st state in

Wow, gorgeous photos! I am so jealous! I have never been anywhere tropical, and sometimes, the winters here make me wish I lived some place like that!
